OVERCOMING PERSONAL INCREDULITY (I JUST DON'T BELIEVE IT!): Reducing Our Resistance to Deep Pedagogical Change

The ultimate purpose of teaching is to foster significant learning. We have strong evidence that alternative ways of teaching that will produce really substantial gains in significant learning. Indeed, the idea that we can combine approaches to foster deep developmental change is at the heart of Process Education. However, rather than being persuaded by compelling evidence most faculty strongly resist making major changes in our pedagogy. What factors lead to this resistance and how might we overcome them in ourselves and help others to overcome them? Interactive session.

Researching Online Professional Development

Panelists: Joyce, Colleen, Betty, Lindsey, Masila, Kathy, Libby, Joann, Steve, Wendy

Over the last two months more than a half-dozen conference participants have experienced an online-only version of Pacific Crest's popular Teaching Institute. The online format consisted of a dozen learning activities mediated by a moodle environment that delivered curriculum elements, hosted threaded discussions, supported project work by cooperative learning teams, and archived participant learning journals as well as assessment journals. Many powerful discoveries about distance delivery of faculty development ensued. In this session, peers who participated in this event will rotate between tables in a speed dating format as our community works together to research answers to the following questions.

* How did the online institute compare to other professional development events on teaching/learning?
* What was the greatest challenge for you as an online learner?
* What was the most important thing you learned about teaching learning to learn and self-growth?
* What is the greatest liability for online education?
* What is the greatest asset for online education?

INTEGRATING APPROACHES TO OVERCOMING RESISTANCE TO DEEP PEDAGOGICAL CHANGE.

This session will formalize and expand the ideas developed in the keynote. Approaches that can help us understand resistance and then foster change include: Personal Incredulity, Conceptual Change Theory, Gestalt Switching, Dysfunctional Illusions of Rigor, Fostering Grieving, Learning Theory and Sunk Costs. We will explore several of these and others that you may raise. Interactive session.
