Pre-Conference Workshop STUDENT SUCCESS WORKSHOP (Dr. Dan Apple and Wade Ellis) The Student Success Workshop is based on the premise that a relatively new, key role for educators in higher education is that of a mentor—one who fosters the growth and development of cognitive, social, and affective skills. Mentoring is critical for the student who aspires to take ownership of his or her own learning and become a self-grower. Self-growers develop strong self-assessment skills that help them to continually improve their own performance and ultimately mentor their own growth. A successful student is one who not only succeeds academically but also continues beyond college to develop skills that make success possible in both career and life. CLICK TO LEARN MORE! |

Process Education (PE) in a Nutshell & Welcoming Pizza Social (Dr. Tris Utschig) PE offers a broad array of tools supporting personal and professional educational development. Learning about the various tools and practices in PE enables us to connect to our passion for development whether it be with students in the classroom, with faculty and other stakeholders we support, with our own career, and broadly within our own life as we actively pursue the development of our ideal selves. This session will incorporate a Pizza Social for promoting conference fellowship. |

Plenary (Dr. William Spady) Transforming Your Relationship with Outcomes Both Self-Growth and Outcome-Based Education (OBE) are paradigms and pathways to more advanced states of knowing, doing, and being that reveal and manifest elevated dimensions of human experience. As the visionary and creative catalyst of the OBE movement internationally for five decades, Dr. Spady will illustrate several powerful frameworks of life-performance, personal empowerment Outcomes that: 1) Transcend conventional education’s limiting views of student learning and development; 2) Open the door to self-actualization, and inner-realization; and 3) Challenge educators to view their own professional attributes, consciousness, and identity in a new light and to evoke these same capacities in their students. Dr. Spady is the internationally recognized authority on paradigm shifting and personally empowering approaches to Transformational Outcome-Based Education (TOBE). 2018 marked his fiftieth year as the leading definer, advocate, teacher, and implement of this "Success fo All Learners" paradigm. Today he coordinates a distinguished team of pioneering researchers and change agendas called the New Paradigm Network. Its purpose statement summarizes the essence of his philosophy and career – Creating Transformational Breakthroughs in Learning, Living, and Leadership. |

Plenary (Dr.
Saundra Yancy McGuire) Metacognition: The Key to Fostering Self-Growth and Student Agency Students come to college with widely varying academic skills, approaches to learning, and attitudes about intelligence. Faculty often lament that students are focused on achieving high grades but spend little time or effort on learning. This session will provide evidence of the importance of teaching students simple, but effective learning strategies based on cognitive science principles. In addition, participants will discuss attitudes about intelligence and their impact on student behavior and success. We will engage in interactive reflection activities that will allow attendees to experience strategies that significantly improve learning while transforming student attitudes about the meaning of learning. Dr. Yancy McGuire is the Director Emerita of the Center for Academic Success and retired Assistant Vice Chancellor and Professor of Chemistry at Louisiana State University. She has delivered keynote addresses or presented workshops on effective learning strategies at over 500 institutions in 47 states and thirteen countries. Prior to joining LSU, she spent eleven years at Cornell University, where she received the coveted Clark Distinguished Teaching Award. Her best-selling books, Teach Students How to Learn and Teach Yourself How to Learn, are widely praised by faculty and students. The Parents’ Guide to Studying and Learning was released in January 2022. |
