George Dombi

Why?

This book is a good companion to what we study in Process Education because it gives examples of people who are at the top of their areas of expertise and how they got there. The author exposes the notion of nature vs nurture as both a hollow true-ism and a handy crutch. Some people may have a genetic set of gifts that would do well in a profession, but these gifts need to be developed. Not everyone who has a high IQ ends up making a large contribution to society. One needs to constantly apply themselves.

This workshop will help you create concrete plans to unleash your genius and create a greater positive impact on the world.

Intended Learning Objectives

Resources

Before the Session

  1. As a preparation for the Book Chat participants should watch this 7 minute video review of the book offered here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hl7BN1jVHfk

Session Plan

  1. George will talk a bit about the book, 5 minutes.
  2. We will randomly break up into groups of 4 people and each create a new or existing goal, then create some sub-goals along the way that involve going beyond our existing practice. 15-20 minutes
  3. Group members will share goals and offer additional steps to the goal seeker. 20 minutes (5 per member)
  4. Groups will come back together and report 1-2 insights that they had while practicing the goal setting or by listening to group members comment on the goal setting. (examples: Your goal steps are too far apart given the time frame. Can you keep up that pace of practice? How will you reward yourself for meeting your sub-goals? Your main goal and sub-goals sound reasonable, can I work with you to help achieve them?
  5. From each group 2 teams of two will be created and ask the question, "Can I be your accountability partner on your goals and will you be mine?") 5-10 minutes depending on the number of groups.
  6. Total group members will be given the opportunity to check that everyone has an accountability partner and they will create a 3-meeting schedule offline to check on how they are coming along with each others goals. Example; meet in October, November and December. Further meetings are on your own time.
