ABSTRACT
Participants will be introduced to NADE (The National Association of Developmental
Education), an organization committed to assuring quality education for those students
considered to be most at risk of succeeding in higher education. Research-based best
practices will be shared along with opportunities for collaborative involvement to assure
that developmental educators provide the national and local leadership needed to meet the
growing needs of this expanding population of students. This session surveys the broad
spectrum of opportunities available to meet the needs of this eclectic array of students.
Participants will be asked to seriously consider the question, "Will your building ... result
in a stumbling block, or will your building... result in a stepping stone for your students,
your profession, and your careers?"

Panel Discussion
facilitated by Dr. Tris Utschig, Georgia Institute of Technology
Thursday, July 17th, 10:10-11:00
LOCATION: Eagle I & II
ABSTRACT
The panelists in this session are experienced PE practitioners who will introduce several
key aspects of PE in their personal contexts. Panel members will discuss topics from PE
that have acted as catalysts for quality in their own teaching. These include: (1) setting
performance expectations using performance criteria, rubrics, and profiles; (2) promoting
growth via assessment and reflection; (3) learning as a social process through the use of
teams and interactive learning strategies; and (4) going beyond content by focusing on
improving student learning skills. Attendees will have the opportunity to become active
participants in a process education environment during this session by playing a role in
shaping the outcomes for the session, identifying specific aspects of PE in which to
receive advice, and assessing the advice received.

ABSTRACT
In response to accrediting organizations, many programs have adopted team-based
projects to enhance experiential learning. This has resulted in a widespread need
to monitor teamwork performance and document teamwork outcomes. The Transferable
Integrated Design Engineering Education (TIDEE) consortium has developed a web-
based instrument to prompt reflective thinking about teamwork, collect and display
peer review information, and provide individualized instructor feedback. In this
workshop participants will have an opportunity to examine, score, and discuss
examples of student work as well as faculty feedback associated with TIDEE's Team
Citizenship instrument. Student-friendly and faculty-friendly features of the
web implementation of this instrument will be demonstrated at the end of the workshop.

ABSTRACT
This paper examines the need for developing inclusive post-secondary classroom
environments that value diversity. It explains the results of a survey which asks
about race and gender issues at a mid-western, four-year public university. Students
from a minority ethnic background and their experiences inside and outside the
classroom are described. A workshop, called "Honorable Differences"
is implemented, with discussions of the relationship between student diversity
and effective learning.

ABSTRACT
Challenging students to display higher levels of performance can show respect
for learners and can stimulate growth. To do this effectively, it is important
to be aware of the positive and negative consequences of issuing different levels
of challenge. A central tenet of this paper is that there is always a tension
between challenging the performance of learners and providing affective support.
Faculty need to learn to embrace this tension and preserve a healthy balance by
neither challenging simply for the sake of challenge nor accepting mediocre performance
in the guise of learner support. In addition to examining the complementary role
of challenge and support in learning, and this paper provides a tool kit to help
learners challenge themselves.
