POGIL is both a philosophy and a strategy for
teaching and learning. It is a philosophy because it encompasses
specific ideas about the nature of the learning process and the
expected outcomes. It is a strategy because it provides a specific
methodology and structure that are consistent with the way people
learn to achieve the outcomes. This workshop introduces the
motivation and need for POGIL and describes the research base that
supports it. Participants experience and analyze a POGIL classroom
activity, learn strategies for facilitating learning in a POGIL
classroom, examine student outcomes data that document its
success, and develop their own plan for implementing POGIL.
David Hanson is Distinguished Professor of
Chemistry, former Chair of the Department of Chemistry, former
Director of Stony Brook’s new Learning Communities Program. He has
received awards for excellence in teaching, is an active
researcher with over 140 publications, and has conducted over 90
workshops and presentations nationwide on process education. His
work in developing innovative curriculum materials and teaching
strategies has been supported by 7 grants from the National
Science Foundation since 1996.
