Developing and Improving a Performance Measure for Learning to Learn Facilitation

November 13 (6pm Eastern, 5pm Central, 4pm Mountain, 3pm Pacific)

Join us as Dr. Dan Apple, President of Pacific Crest, will lead this interactive workshop.

In October, the workshop on Learning to Learn Faciltiation produced many valuable insights for the participants with an outcome that a special interest group in the Academy of Process Educators are going to formalize an initiative to help a team become level 5 Learning to learn facilitators. The November workshop will be focused on building a strong description of this performer, the 10 dimension of this performance and developing an holistic performance measure of this performance. Two major outcomes – 1) understand the design process of a performance measure and 2) contribute to producing a tangible performance measure that can support this initiative of the Academy.

This series of synchronous 90 minute online workshops use Process Education principles to share ideas for strengthening the practice in our classrooms. The Learning Process Methodology is fully implemented in the workshops; as participants experience pre-workshop reading and reflection, in-workshop presentation followed by group reflection and assessment of the ideas generated and shared  Similar to our work with students the workshop participants are actively engaged in their learning and challenged to push their knowledge to new levels. Post-workshop assessments show that those participating are growing and learning each time they chose to attend. The workshop are free to PE Academy members and their guests.

•    The paper, Learning to Learn Engineering, by Tris Utschig, Mohamed El-Sayed, William Scheller II, Virgil Cox, Jim Morgan, S. Raj Chaudhury, Daniel Litynski, Steven Beyerlein, David Leasure, and Dan Apple was presented in October at the IEEE sponsored, Frontiers in Education 2018 conference.

•    We are launching a new round of institutional recruitment for members of the Process Education Recovery Course Research Project. Please let dan@pcrest.com or david@pcrest.com know if you'd like your institution to be considered for this important research project. Our goal is to show the effectiveness of the Learning to Learn curriculum for students on probation or who have been dismissed. We would like to get 50 schools in the project for next year and, as they say, "seating is limited".

•    The deadline for submission of abstracts to the Summer 2019 PE Conference is December 1st, 2018. For more information and to submit, please see the page for presenters on the 2018 PE Conference website.

As you probably know this year’s Process Education Conference will be taking place at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. I moved to Mobile two years ago and I’ve fallen in love with both the university and the city. I can list dozens of wonderful places to eat, beautiful views and fun places to hang out. And part of the conference experience will be getting to enjoy a few of those things.
However, I doubt many of you would make the trip down here just for that. As academics our time is extremely valuable, and there are always multiple places to spend each minute. So, in order to get you here, the conference has to provide you with excellent value for both your time and whatever financial investment you and your university makes.

I’ve been participating in the Conference Planning Committee Zoom calls (You can join the call, the first and third Mondays of the Month using Zoom: https:// zoom.us/j/617925166) and I believe that we are delivering on that. There will be opportunities to learn how to improve our classroom skills. There will be opportunities to hear the latest research, and to impact its development. If you are so inclined there is an opportunity (peer reviewed) to present your own research and get valuable feedback. There is time in the schedule to catch up with old friends and make new ones (or, to put that more professionally, time to network). And there will also be the aforementioned fun activities.

So, there is ample reason to attend already. But the conference can be made even better, with your help. The single best thing about any conference I’ve ever been to has been the people, and if you’re reading this I want to meet you. Simply put, the conference will be better if you attend. And it will be even better if you bring a friend. With that in mind I have a couple favors to ask. First, make your decision to attend this year’s PE conference. Second, ask someone to come with you. You know that the experience will be beneficial to them personally and professionally, so it’s not like you’re imposing. Finally, (I guess this will make three things) let me know why you’re a part of PE, why you would attend a conference, and what you think might motivate your colleagues to attend.
