Workshop Instructions

The quality of an organization and its programs is highly impacted by systematic, ongoing assessment. If the Academy is going to model Process Education, it should embody the best practices that it itself publishes, including program assessment. The context for this session will be a Program Assessment System (PAS) for the Academy, but the underlying design process can be used by everyone at their own institution to better align annual activities with strategic plan goals.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand how performance criteria are created for an organization, capturing the level of quality that an organization is striving to achieve.
  2. Visualize how a program assessment system can inform the updating of a strategic plan and the annual operational plan.
  3. Assess a draft plan that can be used to produce annual assessment reports for the Academy.
  4. Prepare the Academy for a productive workshop at the PE Conference that will produce an operational plan for the Academy in 2017-2018.

Performance Criteria

The Academy of Process Educators has a viable program assessment system that:

  • Gets approved by the Academy Board
  • Has consensus of workshop participants that the associated performance criteria can be used to create valuable annual assessment reports
  • Provides some measures that can be used in 2017-18 to collect performance data that can be used to enrich annual assessment reports

  • Register for the workshop
  • Read through this facilitation plan
  • Ensure that you have access to and can use any of the following browsers: Google Chrome, Apple Safari, or Mozilla Firefox. Internet Explorer will not work.
  • Complete the following reading by May 10.
  • For the QUALITIES/CHARACTERISTICS portion of the PAS, each participant should attempt to do the following by May 1:
  • Brainstorm up to 3 attibutes for any (or all) of the qualities/characteristics, provide a corresponding definition of what performance of that attribute looks like, and an instructive measure for that attribute. Please share this work on the forum for this workshop. Here's a model that might help clarify where to focus and what to look for.

  • Qualities/Characteristics:
    • Growth: We value transformational learning that positively impacts individuals and organizations and is sustained by ongoing reflection and assessment activities designed to produce measurable improvement.
      - cultivation of assessment mindset
      - expanding professional roles
    • Community: We value the synergy and strength generated via collaboration and communication with colleagues from a diverse array of disciplines, backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives working together to elevate learning across many contexts.
      - vibrancy (engaged membership- meeting frequently with common goals)
      - sustainability (enhanced membership-recruitment)
      - equity (2017 PE Conference)
      - servant leadership (receiver side)
    • Performance: We value increasing and consistent production of high quality results developed through enriched learning environments built upon the dedication and integrity of the individuals involved and utilizing research-based practices supported by clear criteria and measurable outcomes.
      - scholarship of teaching learning
      - models PE practice in activity design, assessment tools, and facilitation
      - servant leadership (leader side)
      - deploying a program assessment system
Performance Academy (in its performance as an organization) Baking a cake
    Quality/Characteristic growth looks attractive/delicious
    Attribute assessment-mindset frosting
Definition of high-quality performance continuously seeks assessment in varied contexts frosting is evenly and/or artfully applied (example)
Measure (simple) counting the number of assessments offered by the Academy in conjunction with workshops, meetings, conferences, etc. counting mistakes (air bubbles, crumbs in the frosting, etc)
Measure (more complex) a rubric that measures the degree to which assessments are used to strengthen future performance (such as with the annual conference); the scale could correlate the degree to which "Areas for Improvement" for Year A became something else in Year B (a scale from "Still an Area for Improvement" at one end to "Became a strength" at the other)

a rubric that offers a scale of how elaborately decorated the cake is (a scale from A to B)

  • At 7pm EST on May 10, 2017, join the Zoom meeting using the information available in the column at left. Should this be your first Zoom meeting, here are instructions on how to join a Zoom meeting. The Facilitator will give a brief orientation to the workshop and then will create Zoom Breakout Rooms for the teams. Each team will work in their Breakout Room to complete the workshop sections.
    • You can phone in to the meeting, but should use your browser to join the online portion.
